Odebrecht hands over DP World Santos terminal
Lulu Rumsey | 06 June 2017
Lobo de Rizzo Advogados has helped Odebrecht’s transport arm sell a majority stake in a terminal at the port of Santos on Brazil’s southeast coast to Dubai marine terminal operator DP World. The Middle Eastern buyer hired Stocche Forbes Advogados.
DP World bought a 66.6% stake in the Embraport terminal in a deal that was signed on 29 May. The value of the sale was kept confidential.
The move hands DP World the entirety of the Santos terminal, which it bought a minority stake in back in 2013, when it first entered Brazil. The port of Santos is the busiest container port in Latin America.
Odebrecht – which was fined US$2.6 billion for its role in corruption involving state-owned energy company Petrobras in April – is divesting assets to protect its long-term profitability within the context of Brazil’s prolonged economic crisis. Brazil emerged from its worst ever recession in the first quarter of 2017, but political crises and continuing corruption scandals mean the country’s future remains uncertain.
