Tax practitioner Mariana Miranda Lima, 34, and litigation lawyer Luis Fernando Guerrero, 34, joined the partnership on 12 April, increasing the firm’s partner count to 20. “This step is absolutely in line with our no holds barred investment strategy when it comes to developing our tax and litigation practices,” says Lobo & de Rizzo managing partner Rodrigo Millar de Castro Guerra. “Tax and litigation are strategic sectors in our plans for the future [and] I anticipate that most of our efforts will go towards making both areas as well-known in the market as our M&A practice is today.” Brazil’s complex tax system and the critical role it plays in mergers and acquisitions means the practice is essential for sizeable firms like Lobo & de Rizzo. Lima’s arrival adds depth to the department, which is led by Alexandre Siciliano Borges. Lima comes to the firm after nearly a year at Lefosse Advogados as an associate. She also previously worked at São Paulo tax boutique Advocacia Krakowiak. Elsewhere, Guerrero’s promotion bolsters a department that recently lost a key partner. In 2015 former department head Ana Paula Araújo left to establish her own firm. Since then, Guerrero has led the practice and is now focusing his efforts on a two-pronged growth strategy involving increased associate training and the courting of new clients. Lobo & de Rizzo’s latest additions to the partnership come less than a month after it hired former Machado, Meyer, Sendacz e Opice Advogados corporate and infrastructure partner Daniella Tavares. Demand for tax and litigation lawyers is high in Brazil at the moment. Campos Mello Advogados recently hired an independent tax lawyer after Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown poached much of its team. Elsewhere, Mattos Muriel Kestener spin-off Mattos Engelberg recruited a disputes partner to spearhead a new litigation practice in São Paulo, while Felsberg Advogados promoted a litigation practitioner to the partnership last week.
